One of the first signs my nervous system needs support is often feeling more reactive, overstimulated, or irritable.
Sometimes it shows up as impatience, feeling touched out, struggling to switch off, or finding it harder to settle than usual.
Over time, yoga has helped me recognise these signs earlier instead of pushing through them. And honestly, this can feel especially true in parenthood.
Whether you have a newborn waking through the night, a busy toddler climbing all over you, or older children constantly needing your attention, your nervous system can end up carrying a huge mental, emotional, and physical load.
Many parents move through the day in a constant state of “doing”: responding, soothing, multitasking, anticipating needs, holding everything together.
Eventually the body starts whispering for support — often through tension, exhaustion, overwhelm, difficulty switching off, or increased irritability.
The thing is, mental wellbeing isn’t only about mindset. It’s deeply connected to the body and nervous system too.
When we stay in prolonged stress, the nervous system can remain stuck in a heightened state of alertness. This is why slowing down can sometimes feel surprisingly difficult, even when we know we need rest.
This is one of the reasons I believe yoga can be such powerful support for parents and mental wellbeing. Gentle movement, conscious breathing, mindfulness, and rest can help:
- regulate the nervous system;
- release physical tension;
- create moments of pause;
- improve body awareness;
- support emotional regulation;
- reconnect us back to ourselves.
Not because yoga “fixes” everything — but because it creates space for the body to feel safe enough to soften.
Sometimes that support looks like attending a Mums n’ Bubs class where you can move gently with your baby nearby, without pressure or expectation.
And sometimes it looks like taking an hour entirely for yourself in an evening class — breathing deeply, stretching out tension, and remembering that your needs matter too. Both are valuable. Both count.
You don’t need to arrive calm, flexible, or experienced. You’re welcome exactly as you are 🤍
