I often hear “I can’t stand the thought of having to sit in silence with my thoughts” and I get it – silence can be really triggering. 10 years ago I would have said the same thing! There is no way I would have done anything other than fast paced HIIT, pilates or pump classes where there is no time to stop and rest.
But, when I look back now, I see these types of exercises we’re only keeping me in a constant state of dysregulation and need to be on the go. Not to say these exercises are bad but when that’s all you do and leave no time for the kind of rest that calms your nervous system, well you may be putting yourself in a constant state of dysregulation like I was.
Slowing down can feel “unproductive” when we are use to always being on the go but the type of rest yoga offers can help return our nervous system to the optimal state which actually allows us to be more productive. There is an old Zen saying “you should sit in meditation for 20 minutes a day, unless you’re too busy; then you should sit for an hour.”
If this is true for you, I would suggest being really kind to yourself and starting with either Hatha or Yoga with weights. Both of these types of yoga invite you to focus on your breath while challenging your body. They can be a wonderful first step . The attentional control developed through these classes allows you to be more present and mindful on and off the mat.
Yin and meditation can be quite difficult if you are not yet comfortable in the abovementiomed classes. I do have a meditation 101 online course to help anyone keen to gently start implementing meditation into their lives from the comfort of their own home.
I personally love sitting in silence now but I believe my role is to guide, so I won’t leave my students to sit in complete silence even in yin or meditation. I love adding music, sound healing and themes to these classes.
It can be hard to really pay attention to ourselves and listen to what we need but so worth it. Beginners are welcome to all of my classes, I will always provide variations to suit the different needs of my students.
